Become a Movie Extra
What do they do?
You are part of the scene being filmed that day. You can stay on the set for a few hours to several hours a day. You are going to stand around and wait until you get called. You will need to bring a book or tablet.
I have done movie extra work. I have been a movie extra for a few production companies. The work can be long
but fun at times. A few times I was chosen to be a feature extra. I worked on the set of Burn Notice and done work on Discovery channel - Unusual Suspects.
How much do they earn?
You average minimum wage to $40 to $50 an hour. I averaged around
$150 a day including lunches. If you are part of a union like SAG, you will
make a lot more money.
Will you become an actor doing extra work?
It might be a way to get you in the door. If you need to network
with people in the industry or know someone that has a major push or can help
you gain popularity, then I would say yes.
You can find many casting websites like Central Casting and
Backstage. I use local talent agencies like Sam Talent and Famous Faces. Almost every
city has a talent agency that can help you find extra work.
I would recommend getting good head shots as well as body
shots if possible.
You may or may not get a lot of work to keep you busy. If
you want to do this on a full time basis best to contact your talent agency
often for work.
I am not an actor after many extra roles but work can be rewarding and fun to see how a set is organized. With hard work, you can become an actor!
Great acting website and reel example www.christinaderosa.com for a great career in acting.
Enjoy your next adventure!
